Acklen family papers

Scope and Contents

The collection consists chiefly of copies of documents and letters from the Louisiana Land Office, covering the granting, surveying, seeling, mortgaging, and other topics, of land in West Feliciana Parish, Greensburg district, and around the Lake of the Cross. The documents pertain to tracts of land purchased by Joseph A.S. Acklen in the 1850s and trace the history of the various titles. There are also maps showing property and personal letters.

The Byrne family papers consists of correspondence, copies of deeds, photographs, genealogical research, and writings composed and gathered by Celeste Byrne. Celeste Byrne worked on a book project that documented 300 years of Byrne family history up until her grandfather's death in 1903.

Scope and Contents The collection consists of land surveys by G. Dunbar, C. Trudeau, J. Loveball, J. Fairlamb, and C. Bolling, all of whom were early surveyors of various districts of Louisiana. These districts include Natchez, Galvez-Town, Baton Rouge, Metairie, Feliciana, and others. Most of the land applications were produced during the regimes of governors Miró and Carondolet. Scope and Contents The collection consists of documents for the sale of land at Grand Prairie, Prairie Basse, and Petite Prairie, on Bayous Teche, Carencro, Caron, Chicot, Cataran, and Tortu. There are also slave sales documents, marriage contracts, a land survey, and one lease of cattle and a dairy.
