Scope and Contents

1880s-1900s.  A family album containing 13 original silver gelatin and platinum print photographs (6 1/2" x 5"), plus 19 photographic reproductions. There are two platinum prints of the house occupied by their friends the Maudslay's. The images provide views of the family's home and properties in Coban, Guatemala and parts of Mexico.  A list of manuscript captions are most likely in Mary Elizabeth Parker Sarg’s hand. 32 total images.

Biographical or Historical Information

This album comes from the estate of Tony Sarg, a German-American puppeteer and illustrator. Anthony Frederick "Tony" Sarg was born on April 21, 1880 in Cobán, Guatemala to Francis Charles Sarg and Mary Elizabeth Parker Sarg.  Francis Sarg held several political appointments including: Consular Agent of the USA in Cobán in 1875; German Vice-Consul in Cobán in 1879; and the German Consul in Guatemala in 1884. The family retired to Frankfurt, Germany in 1887. Alfred Maudslay, the noted Mayan archeologist, was often a visitor to the Sarg’s home when passing through Cobán and was a longtime friend of the Sarg family.
