Biographical or Historical Information

Antíoco Cruces and Luis Campa were perhaps the most successful Mexican photographers in the latter half of the 19th century. Both attended the prestigious Academy de San Carlos art school in Mexico City and were supported by fellow photographer, José María de la Torre, who worked with them between 1863 and 1866. The pair established their reknown photography studio, Fotografía Artística in the heart of the city. In 1876, their work, "Popular Mexican Types" or "tipos" won them a bronze medal for artistic merit at the International Exposition held in Philadelphia. The following year, Campa left the business to teach at the Academy de San Carlos, but Cruces remained active as a photographer.

Cruces y Campa employed their excellent business savvy using the new photographic technology of carte-de-visite to market their photographic series including those of Mexican people in daily life (Occupationals) and later of famous people in Mexican history (Gobernantes). The use of the cartes-de-visite format was a specialty of Cruces y Campa, who were pioneers of the medium in Mexico.
