William A. Smith letters
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of letters written to William A. Smith's wife, Caroline, while he was a solider with a Massachusetts unit marching with General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks in Louisiana. He wrote from several locations, including Baton Rouge, Opelousas, Barries Landing, Burwicks Bay, and Port Hudson. Smith describes the events leading up to the siege of Port Hudson, including vignettes of camp life, African American support of Union troops, relations with locals, food and food preparation.
