Scope and Contents

This collection of records from New Orleans architect Donald Henry Caldwell (1936-2009)'s office, as well as the architectural firm of Caldwell and Bedikian (Victor Bedikian 1932-2016), includes project drawings for commercial and residential buildings in New Orleans and throughout Louisiana.

Biographical / Historical

Caldwell was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and received his B.A. in Architecture from Tulane University in 1957. He worked in the offices of Mann and Harover in Tennessee, Andres and McGrady in North Carolina, A. Hays Town in Baton Rouge, and Curtis and Davis in New Orleans. He formed a partnership with Victor Bedikian in 1962 under the name Caldwell and Bedikian, Architects. The firm lasted for 25 years and produced projects including the Congregation Gates of Prayer in Metairie, Louisiana, Jo Ellen Smith Psychiatric Hospital, and the West Bank Medical Center, all in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Caldwell later practiced under his own name. He served on the Vieux Carre Commission, was a member of the Architectural Review Committee, and the Historic District Landmarks Commission in New Orleans. He was also a model car enthusiast.
