Scope and Contents

This collection of records from the New Orleans architectural office of Toledano, Wogan, and Bernard (Albert Toledano, 1859-1923; Victor Wogan, 1870-1953; Joseph George Bernard, 1888-1980), as well as records from successor offices, includes project drawings, specifications, professional correspondence, photographs, and renderings related to residential, commercial, educational, religious, social, and institutional buildings and additions. Projects were done in New Orleans, throughout Louisiana, and a few cities throughout the United States.

Biographical / Historical

With predecessor and successor offices, the firm of Toledano, Wogan, and Bernard practiced in New Orleans for 70 years, designing notable buildings in the city and throughout Louisiana. Major commissions include the Monteleone Hotel, the B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 30, St. Anthony of Padua church and school, and the buildings of the first campus of Xavier University.

Office chronology: Toledano and Wogan (1898-1914); Toledano, Wogan, and Bernard (1914-1923); Wogan and Bernard (1923-1946; 1949-1953); Wogan, Bernard, and de la Vergne (1946-1949) (Jules K. de la Vergne, 1911-1975); Bernard and Bernard (1953-1968) (Joseph Grima Bernard, 1921-2010).

This collection is arranged into four series: Series 1: Project Drawings; Series 2: Project Correspondence; Series 3: Project Photographs, Mounted Renderings, and Diplomas; Series 4: Bound Ledgers.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Records were given by Joseph George Bernard and Joseph Grima Bernard to Tulane in 1975. Additional Toledano and Wogan, and Toledano and Reusch drawings were given by Jeff Bernard in 2016.
