Scope and Contents

This collection of records from Hayward L. Burton (1867-1953)'s office, as well as records from predecessor and successor offices, largely consists of project drawings and specifications for commercial, institutional, residential, and social projects across Louisiana and throughout the United States. Slight professional correspondence is also maintained.

Biographical / Historical

Hayward Logan Burton was born in Mississippi City, Mississippi. He apprenticed with New Orleans architect Thomas Sully (1855-1939). He eventually partnered with Sully, Albert Toledano (1859-1923), and Samuel Stone, Jr. (1869-1933), forming Sully, Burton, and Stone Company. In 1899, Burton partnered with architect Theodore Oscar Fraenkel, and then with Albert S. Bendernagel.

Office chronology: Burton and Fraenkel (1899-1901) (Theodore O. Fraenkel, 1857-1924); Hayward Burton (1902-1914); Burton and Bendernagel (1914-1922) (Albert Bendernagel, 1876-1952); H.L. Burton (1922-1953).

This collection is arranged into two series: Series 1: Project Drawings; Series 2: Project Specifications and Related Materials.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Records were placed with the Manuscripts Department (now the Louisiana Research Collection, LaRC) of the Tulane Library in 1956 by Emily Burton Lewis. Records were transferred to SEAA in 1980.
