This collection contains the legal documents of Mrs. Ruth Phelps Smyth, pertaining to inherited land in Texas. It also Includes correspodence between Smyth and various lawyers dealing with a legal dispute with the Mulhauphts (half-brothers and step-father). Additionally, it includes genealogy of the Phelps family.

Biography

Ruth Phelps Smyth was the daughter of Nannie Phelps (maiden name Taylor) and Rinaldo A. Phelps. Nannie Phelps's father, Dr. Joseph Taylor, owned land in Texas and Louisiana. When Dr. Taylor died, Nannie Phelps and her children, including Ruth Phelps Smyth, inherited the land. In 1879 Nannie Phelps remarried Otto Mulhaupt, and had two more children. When Nannie Mulhaupt died in 1914, there was dispute about the ownership of the land.
