Scope and Contents
The collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, architectural drawings, original artwork, newspaper clippings, printed material, and other papers from Nathaniel Cortlandt Curtis (1881-1953). The manuscripts for most of his publications are included in this collection. There are also manuscripts for two novels and several essays.

Biographical / Historical
Nathaniel Cortlandt Curtis (1881-1953) was head of architecture at Tulane University from 1912 to 1917 when he left New Orleans. He returned to New Orleans in 1920 to teach part-time at Tulane and to work with the architectural firm of Goldstein, Parham and Labouisse until his death. Curtis published several books and novels, including Architectural Composition and New Orleans, Its Old Houses, Shops and Public Buildings. He also designed Jones Hall, the Louisiana Research Collection's current home. His son, Nathaniel Cortlandt Curtis, Jr. (1917-1997), was also a prominent architect, helping to found the firm Curtis and Davis. The firm was responsible for the main branch of the New Orleans Public Library, the Superdome, and many other area buildings.
