Mrs. William J. Behan collection on Confederate memorials
Scope and Contents
The collection consists primarily of newspaper clippings (1800s-1940s) collected by Mrs. William J. Behan that reflect her active involvement in honoring Confederate veterans and casualties. Behan was president for many years of the Ladies' Southern Memorial Association of New Orleans, which is often mentioned in both correspondence and clippings. She was also involved in the Jefferson Davis Monument Association of New Orleans as well as the Presbyterian Church in the Confederate States of America. Also included in the collection are poems by William Watson McWhan.

Biographical / Historical
Mrs. William J. Behan (née Kate Walker) is the wife of General William J. Behan, who fought with the Washington Artillery during the Civil War. Behan was also mayor of New Orleans (1882-1884). She was president of the Confederate Southern Memorial Association and the Ladies' Southern Memorial Association of New Orleans. She was also involved in the Jefferson Davis Monument Association of New Orleans as well as the Presbyterian Church in the Confederate States of America.
