Series 8: Joseph Jones Steamboat Series
Scope and Contents
The Joseph M. Jones Steamboat collection contains 60 linear feet of images of different types of riverboats from the 19th and 20th centuries. The images showcase sternwheelers, sidewheelers, tugboats, packets, showboats, and other types of riverboats during their construction phase, traveling along the Mississippi and other rivers, and being dismantled, as well as river towns, docks, riverboat captains, industry executives, and other people involved with waterways.
Biographical / Historical
One of the larger collections of steamboat images in the world, the Joseph M. Jones Steamboat collection was originally curated by Captain Donald T. Wright, editor and publisher of the Waterways Journal from 1921-1965. In 1966, the Joseph Merrick and Eugenie Penick Jones Foundation purchased the collection of photographs in 1966 from Capt. Wright’s estate and donated them to Tulane University.
